Small children, small worries. Big Children, Big Worries

Many of us know this saying. And as is often the case with sayings, we can find a grain of truth in it.

At OSS, we’d like to add something to that: your worries are our worries.

As a parent, you hope that your children will find their way later in life. That’s usually the case. Sometimes, however, health problems or a disability mean that your child continues to need support even as an adult. To make sure, that social security cover is not lost in such cases is critical.

When your child reaches the age of majority

Are you insured with OSS and do you have an additional insurance policy for medical care? You can include your children as dependent on your policy.

Once we have identified your child via the Central Social Security Database or receive a birth certificate, we confirm their coverage until they reach the age of 18.

Does your child continue their studies? An annual school certificate is sufficient to extend their coverage. Coverage is available until the end of their studies, but by the age of 25.

Most young adults then start work and can stand on their own two feet.

If independent living is impossible?

Some young adults are unable to look after themselves due to an illness or disability.

We do not let parents and children down in such situations.

If a parent is insured with the OSS, they can have their child’s medical file assessed by the OSS’s consulting doctor. If this medical file shows that the child is unable to support themselves, their status as a dependent child may be extended.

Provided the parent remains insured with OSS, cover will continue for as long as necessary.

What happens if you, as a parent, are no longer here?

Not even expats live forever.

If you die and were insured with the OSS as an expat, your children may receive an orphan’s pension.

They receive this pension until they reach the age of 18. Are your children continuing their studies? Payments will continue until the end of their studies until they are 25.

For children who were diagnosed with a disability before reaching the age of 18 and who are therefore unable to support themselves, entitlement to an orphan’s pension may continue for life.

The OSS provides long-term financial security for those who need it most in this way.

Social protection is about people

We often talk about files, claims and reimbursements at the OSS. However, people are behind every file. Behind every access lies a personal story. That is why social protection is more than just rules. It is about continuity, humanity and the certainty that vulnerable people will not be left behind when life takes a different turn than expected.

Some worries do not go away, no matter how old your children are. And that is precisely why we make your worries our own.
