Working self-employed outside Europe: opportunities, challenges and our checklist

Life as a self-employed person, particularly outside Europe, sounds tempting as it promises flexibility, adventure and opportunities for international growth. Hence, a complex and day-to-day reality lies behind this attractive façade: uncertainty, bureaucratic hurdles and the search for balance.

Financial uncertainty

The freedom of self-employment also means bearing all the risks yourself. You don't have an employer to act as a safety net, neither a fixed monthly salary. You need to draw on your savings in the event of illness or time off.

Social protection: piecing it together and planning

It isn’t always easy to understand regulations regarding sickness, accidents or maternity leave. Social security is hardly a given in many countries. The OSS provides a voluntary scheme that offers benefits in the event of incapacity for work, and access to medical care by Belgian principles. This is a way for the self-employed, to spread the risks and further develop their careers.

Financial preparation

• Do you have sufficient savings to cover unexpected expenses or periods without income?
• Do you have an idea of the cost of living (accommodation, taxes, medical care) in the country where you will be working?
• Are your fees aligned with both the local market and Belgian standards?

Social security

• Do you have insurance cover for illness, accidents and incapacity for work?
• Can you continue to build up your pension?
• Does your social security cover also include co-insurance for family members?

Administration and legal matters

• Are your contracts ironclad and legally sound for international collaboration?
• Are you familiar with the local regulations regarding taxes, VAT obligations and various declarations?
• Have all matters relating to visas, work permits and any necessary licences been sorted out?

Work-life balance

• Can you set aside enough time to relax, to exercise and to socialise?
• Do you use digital tools to keep your work and private life separate?
• Have you established clear boundaries and routines?

Network

• Do you have access to local and digital business networks?
• Do you know people who can help you with legal, administrative or medical issues?
• Are you a member of an expat or freelancer groups?

Health and wellbeing

• Do you know who to turn to for medical care, hospital stays and emergencies?
• Do you have a plan for psychological support or coaching?
• Do you have reliable care providers and insurance companies nearby?

Family and relationships

• Is your family well informed and prepared for the adventure?
• Have you made arrangements for keeping in touch with your family?

Monitoring and assessment

• Do you regularly assess your financial, social and professional situation?
• Are you prepared for a return home or a change to your plans?
• Do you try to keep up to date with current trends and legislation in Belgium and in your destination country?
