Working abroad
In what countries does my insurance cover me?
Overseas Social Security supplementary insurance policies provide worldwide coverage. This is irrespective of the fact whether a country is recognized or not. So the coverage also applies for instance to countries such as Abkhazia, Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, Taiwan, South Ossetia and the Western Sahara.
However, just because you enjoy coverage in every country in the world, this does not mean you can affiliate for every country.
You can affiliate if you are working outside of any Member State of the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Only the following exceptions apply to this rule:
- You cannot affiliate in the French Overseas Territories: French Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and Réunion.
- You can affiliate on the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey.
Some examples:
- You are working in France: you cannot affiliate to the Overseas Social Security. Consequently you are not covered by the Overseas Social Security.
- You are working in Congo: you can affiliate to the Overseas Social Security. Have you also affiliated to a supplementary insurance? Then you enjoy worldwide coverage, even if you go to Spain for the holidays, as an example.
Still in doubt about whether you can affiliate or have questions about the coverage of your supplementary policy? Contact our Frontline at overseas@onss.fgov.be or +32 2 509 90 99
