Although public services are increasingly focusing on digital communication, only 45% of Flemish people are fully open to this new standard. So, there is still a way to go.

More than an ordinary mailbox

The eBox is a personal and digital mailbox introduced by the Belgian government to simplify communication between citizens, businesses and government departments. Therefore, every Belgian citizen has an eBox. It allows them to send and receive official documents (tax returns, social security information, etc.) digitally through a secure platform. You can access your official documents anywhere, anytime. And the icing on the cake is that it reduces the mountain of administrative paperwork.

What does it mean for expats?

By activating the eBox before you go abroad, you not only benefit from the convenience and speed but also stay in touch with the Belgian government as well as with Overseas Social Security. In fact, the moment you make an online application to join, apply for a reimbursement of your medical expenses or apply for your pension, all related information is sent to your eBox. You will also receive an annual statement of the pension rights you have already acquired.

How do I activate my eBox?

Every Belgian citizen has an eBox. Do you want to make use of it? Then activate it using your electronic identity card or the itsme application. You can then access your government documents securely and reliably.

  1. Activate your eBox using itsme or your eID,
  2. Once your eBox is activated, you will receive a confirmation email,
  3. View or adjust your personal settings,
  4. Indicate which documents you want to receive digitally and how you would like to be informed of them.
